Classicism and modernity intermingle in this program. Written in the middle of the world war in 1916 and created two years later in St. Petersburg, after the Russian revolution, Prokofiev's first symphony nevertheless wearing the classic subtitle. In 2006, Philippe Hersant, a former resident of the Casa de Velasquez and Villa Medicis, gives to his virginal tomb, nostalgic accents and literary references. Finally, the Eighth Symphony of Beethoven, described as a small symphony by his contemporaries, presents itself as a successful outcome of the classical form.
